Watch highlights from the 2024 Tumbleweeds Film Festival for Kids
The 2024 festival theme, “Finding Joy Together,” celebrated children and families’ unique stories, creating a vibrant space for kids to share their experiences. The films in the 2024 festival reflected the power of friendship, teamwork, and relying on your community to find happiness and belonging in the face of challenges. The theme continued with kid-centric film workshops and panels — through play and active discovery, participants gain a greater understanding of film techniques and technologies while building confidence and curiosity.
Thank you for making this year unforgettable
Together we watched stories about the power of friendship, teamwork, and relying on our communities— learning about how we can find joy in our shared experiences. All films were free to attend and represented various languages and backgrounds from around the world!
As part of our free special guest presentations, we created awesome audio illusions with sounds from unexpected objects! Plus, we dove into the art of sketch comedy with JK! Studios and discovered how to create the world of a movie with Mark Hofeling, the production designer behind Disney’s High School Musical and Descendants films!
Our festival workshops were buzzing with creativity as young minds explored the art of cinema through hands-on activities and industry-expert guidance. From scriptwriting to cinematography, kids learned the ins and outs of movie editing, character design, acting for the camera, and so much more! Our dynamic workshops ignited imaginations, fostered teamwork, and empowered budding filmmakers to bring their visions to life on the big screen.
In the Tumbleweeds Clubhouse, families engaged with activities like making stop motion animation films with LEGOS, creating props and backdrops out of up-cycled materials, and dressing up in costumes to take pictures at the photo booth.
Friday’s Kids Film Competition gave students the chance to showcase their talent on the big screen with an awards ceremony that rewarded young filmmakers from grades K-8! The competition gave young filmmakers an outlet to express themselves creatively and to practice the art of moviemaking.
Thanks again for joining us, and a huge thank you to the festival’s following lead partners and sponsors: The County Library; Utah Education Network; Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts, and Parks; the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation; Zions Bank; S.J. and Jessie E.
